A friendly and supportive circle in which playwrights can share their work and work-in-progress, run by The Bread & Roses Theatre Company on once a month.
The Bread & Roses Theatre Company has been developing and supporting new writers since 2012; and since the launch of the theatre in November 2014 the venue has also established itself as a popular place for quality new writing, amongst both playwrights as well as audiences.
The newly launched in-house Playwrights' Circle is an opportunity to share up to 10 minutes of a new play, this can be a short play in its entirety or an extract from a longer piece. Our focus lies on the circle sharing their work and providing supportive and constructive feedback for one another.
Furthermore, it is also an opportunity to introduce your work to The Bread & Roses Theatre's team. We will amongst others be looking out for new short plays for future instalments of our scratch night The Platform, and also welcome those wanting to put forward proposals for our programming to bring along excerpts of their plays.
Directors, actors, producers and other creatives interested in discovering new plays and the theatre are also more than welcome to come along! More details and upcoming dates at www.breadandrosestheatre.co.uk.
Clapham Original Poets
Clapham Original Poets started in January 2013, and operates an open door policy for those who wish to participate in a workshop-style writer’s group; over time, a core of practicing and often published poets has emerged whilst a warm welcome awaits new poets. Membership of the Poetry Society is highly recommended as part of your experience and is required in order to enter Society-sponsored competitions. Organised readings - whether behind the mic or attending in support. - are a regular activity. Of course, we love the Open Mic night on Wednesdays at the Bread and Roses!
Our format is to gather at 7 pm, exchange any poetry news, and give each poet in attendance time to read, followed by feed back and discussion. Taking on board any suggestions and comments is always at the poet’s discretion, but I have usually found that the insight and input of others is really helpful in developing a work.
We modestly style ourselves as the Clapham Original Poets due to our inception as members of the Original Writers group. Now happily affiliated with the Poetry Society, we continue to have a friendly relationship with OWG as some members also write short stories, plays and novels. It is safe to say that you will find that the Original Poets have a passion for English literature and language, and enjoy sharing this with other group members. For the Clapham Stanza, the poem’s the thing!
Our meetings convene on the 3rd Monday of every month. Please bring along a poem (typed 14 point font size is preferred format but not required - some people do handwrite and photocopy) and several copies (I usually bring 12 plus 1 for me; average group size ranges from 8 to 14).
