9.15pm Neev - Glaswegian singer-songwriter Neev writes beautiful songs that stay with you.

Neev performed tracks from Currants live and televised for the BBC Introducing x Celtic Connections Showcase at Saint Luke's in Glasgow in 2022.

Neev has just released her debut album, Katherine, a collection of intricate indie-folk songs that pack a lyrical punch and recieved four stars from the Daily Express. Tracks from the record have already been played on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6 and BBC Radio Scotland. Tracks from the record have been broadcast of Mark Radcliffe’s BBC Radio 2 Folk Show and named BBC Introducing Track of the week on Scotland's Travelling Folk show.

Live Music: Tim Atkins, Bob Things, Csjlla

Set times:

20:45 - Csjlla

21:30 - Bob Things
22:25 - Tim Atkins

Csjlla

Canadian/Hungarian artist Csjlla plays post-folk music, often described as a “journey” or “dreaming awake” by the audience. A sound somewhere between ambient, traditional and sometimes psychedelic, her songs contemplate lust, spirituality and human responsibilities.

Csjlla released two EP’s, and played at The Alternative Escape, and Sofar Sounds, as well as other festivals and venues in Europe and England.

Bob Things

Hungarian guitarist, composer and singer Robert Berczesi has been

writing songs for more than thirty years. The unmistakable music and innovative lyrics reflect his unique, yet personable approach to life and his way of thinking. Robert, the frontman

and mastermind for the band ‘HIPERKARMA’ is a truly distinctive artist.

In the past 20 years he has performed thousands of times, at all

prestigious music festivals in Hungary, such as the internationally acclaimed

‘Sziget Festival’ and has put out over 38 releases (13 albums and 25 singles

to date). He continues to have a huge cultural impact influencing thousands of

people with every song and performance.

Tim Atkins

Tim comes from a background of playing in loud rock and roll bands in Europe. He spent 7 years living in Budapest playing at the major festivals (Sziget, Volt, Bánkitó) and clubs (A38, Budapest Park, Akvárium) and being played on national TV and Radio. With his various projects he released 2 full albums, 4 EPs, multiple music videos and live sessions.

He moved back to the UK last year and is now prioritising his new, solo brand which performs mostly alone but also with various instrumentations. Tim is working on his debut solo album where he is committed to creating beautiful art and also using it as a language that bridges a gap between the various dualities in his life. He defines his current genre as folk with elements of jazz and soul!

At the Bread and Roses Tim will showcase his songs with a brand new lineup of excellent musicians that he has met since moving to London: Raquel Fuertes, Jon Ip, Jack Rowntree and more…

Live Music: The Apple Shakers + The Shrikes
Apr

8:30 pm20:30

Live Music: The Apple Shakers + The Shrikes

Apple Shakers - an alt-rock two-piece comprising of Rory White (guitar/vocals) and Basil Steiner (drums/synths). Hailing from East Midlands and Zurich respectively, the duo crossed paths in London and although their musical influences were polar opposites, Rory & Basil soon realised that they both shared a common goal of railing against the political and social landscapes of their time, but also to give energy to souls that seek an alternative in a world of structures and formulas.

With a no-holds-barred DIY aesthetic, the band honed their dynamic sonic fusion of Rory's gut-wrenching, caustic guitar riffs, led by his lyrically wry & acerbic sociopolitical observations - aided and abetted by Basil's brash (Moe Tucker-like), metronomic beats & bass-driven synths.

Fiercely independent and with their own East London studio base, the band have released a series of potent, punk-infused singles since 2020, attracting the attention of BBC Radio 1 & 6 Music and BBC Introducing; whilst also embarking on a number of highly inflammable live shows and festivals in the UK and Europe, including securing a slot at Glastonbury 2023.

With their new EP ('Blood, Sweat & Broke'), Apple Shakers are intent on giving the current post-punk scene an almighty kick up the proverbial… in tandem with breaking down the barriers between the band and their audience - "Because escaping isn’t only for Apple Shakers, it’s for everyone who finds themselves in a hole".

The Shrikes - Shrikes are a South London based band with a sound informed by classic post-punk and 80s indie. Walking the through-line from Talking Heads to The Pixies, with a dash of prog-fueled audacity, they serve up a dynamic and super-charged set at turns hysterical and vulnerable, caustic and sincere.

Live Music: French Exit + Ben Stinson

9.30pm - French Exit - a 4 piece alt-rock band based in South East London, which formed in January of 2023 and made a fast start, playing shows across London, including headline slots at the Half Moon and The Bread & Roses.

The band's debut release, Still, was written and recorded late in 2023 with the session engineered by Christopher Smith and the mix coming from Cadien Lake James of Chicago's Twin Peaks. The single has received welcome acclaim from BBC Introducing and Right Chord Music.

In 2024, the band is lined up for more live dates across London, with plenty more material on the way.

"It’s really really powerful. I like that very much indeed. It’s catchy but also it’s got that pathos about it as well. Great track. Really good track." — BBC Introducing on 'Still'

"Those who enjoy South London's bustling music scene will discover a parallel with post-punk favourites such as Shame in Still's composition. The track exudes a raw, energetic vibe that evokes memories of the Brixton heroes. Yet despite being influenced by its predecessors, French Exit still stand tall amongst their alternative peers." — Right Chord Music on 'Still'

8.30pm - Ben Stinson - Born and raised in Morden, South-West London, Ben Stinson is a pop singer-songwriter with a distinctive sound reminiscent of Ed Sheeran and Lewis Capaldi. With over 300 songs written to date, he is as hard-working as he is friendly; be prepared to smile and laugh at his live shows.

His talent has been recognised by renowned industry figures such as mixing engineer Yoad Nevo, who has worked with Ben on his upcoming release, 'Change Colour': "Ben is a super-talented artist and I definitely hope we get to work together again soon!"

In addition to performing, Ben is building a reputation as a collaborator, having written with up and coming artists from across the world, including Australia's Jarrod Jeremiah, Italy's Bianca Ventura and Yorkshire's very own Anya Goel. Among his career highlights, Ben cites playing at world-famous venues such as The Half Moon Putney and The Spice of Life.

Live Music: Project Culture + Cherimoya +Divided Compass

10pm - Project Culture -a 4-piece art rock band who have spent the last few years gigging relentlessly, charming audiences across London and Surrey with their unique blend of melodic indie pop and tryhard slacker rock. They are just as inspired by books, films, theatre and stand-up comedy as they are by indie rock, living up to their name by drawing from a wide range of pop culture to create something truly their own.

The band have been praised by BBC Introducing for their “post-punk energy and the sense of urgency in the songwriting” and their ability to “address and transform clichés into original turns of phrase” in their lyrics, and performed at Alexandra Palace last year as part of the venue's 150th birthday celebrations. For 2024, Project Culture plan on recording and releasing a load of new material, as well as continuing to play some big shows and festivals, and write about themselves in the third person.

9.30pm Cherimoya - a three piece alternative funk/ rock band. They do their best to punch through the norms of rock and roll with their fast paced drums, wacky guitar riffs and funky bass lines!

8.45pm - Divided Compass - a 4 piece Indie Pop/Rock band based in South / East London. Starting out as a studio based project back on 2018, releasing an EP in 2019 and forming as a Live Band in 2021… the group strives to create relatable and immersive tunes through the use of catchy, hopeful melodies and powerful guitar solo’s.

Live Music: The Crumbs + The Harlem Racket + Alf Hill

10pm - The Crumbs - a Rock band of four musicians who have been playing together since 2022, but have been friends for a long time. The Crumbs started during the pandemic. With no festivals or concerts around the world, they decided to make noise in a small studio.
It was love at first rehearsal. There was chemistry in the air. And after a few jam sessions, one thing led to another, and 6 months later "Kill Me Now" was born – The Crumb's first song. A single almost as contagious as the pandemic that brought them together.
Since then, the band stepped on the gas pedal. In less than a year, they released their first album "All Chickens Ready!" with 10 originals, and performed four times in two different countries. Now, The Crumbs want to shift gears and enter the world stages above the speed limit.

9.20pm - The Harlem Racket - The Harlem Racket are known for rowdy, infectious tunes that bleed into garage rock, punk and alt-rock. Debut single Karl Lagerfeld’s Vampire Club was championed by Frank Skinner at Absolute Radio and their EP Three Hours Til Sunrise was featured on Rodney Bingenheimer’s SiriusXM show.

8.45pm - Alf Hill - Alf is an emerging Geordie artist writing his own material as well as covers. His influences are paolo nutini, Sam fender, arctic monkeys and Stereophonics. He released his first single in August 23 and an EP in October of the same year. He’s  appeared at festivals and gig venues across the North East and is very excited to play here at Bread and Roses. He’s a mad keen Newcastle United fan and loves his footie!
